Ghana has taken delivery of 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the German government in support of the country’s fight against the coronavirus.
The deputy minister of health Mahama Asei Seini received the vaccines on behalf of the Government of Ghana on Sunday 26 September at Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
Ghana has recorded nearly 1,200 COVID-19-related deaths from over 125,000 confirmed cases since March 2020.
On Friday (24 September), the Ghana Health Service (GHS) resumed its nationwide COVID-19 vaccination exercise.
A statement from the GHS said that “this phase of the exercise is open to the general public”, adding that individuals aged 18 and older who have never received a vaccine or have received only “one dose of AstraZeneca are to participate in this exercise”.

Since March 2021, over one million people have received at least one dose of AstraZeneca, Sputnik-V or Johnson & Johnson vaccine and nearly 800,000 of this number are fully vaccinated.
The US government has promised to donate over 1.3 million doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to Ghana in addition to the 1.2 million Moderna vaccines from the US which arrived on 4 September 2021.
