2024 Election: CPP not likely to field a presidential candidate, says Sarpong-Soprano

The director of communications of the Convention People's Party (CPP) says the party has not been able elect its presidential candidate due to multiple court cases against its chairman

The director of communications for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Sylvester Sarpong-Soprano, has said the party is likely not going to field a presidential candidate for the 2024 general election.

“I am not sure we can present a candidate [for 2024] because of what is occurring in the party,” Sarpong-Soprano told Asaase Radio in an exclusive interview.

“The party persistently has not been able to organise [itself], and this is because of multiple repeated court cases challenging the chairman and leader,” he added.

With less than six months until the December polls, political parties and movements have intensified their campaigns in order to secure victory.

However,  Sarpong-Soprano says that is not the case for the CPP “unless something dramatic happens within the party [I don’t see how we can field a presidential candidate].”

“As the party stands now, as director of communications committed to telling the truth about the situation in the party in the interest of the party, I don’t see how that [fielding a candidate] might be possible.”

The possible CPP comeback

The CPP’s director of communication further stated that despite the current status of the party, it is possible for the party to win the election owing to Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The party (NPP) has been split, with Alan Kyerematen going his way, just as it happened with Dr. Paa Willie in 1979,” explained Sarpong-Soprano.

“And so, because we believe that history is repeating itself, it was possible that if we had a candidate, if we were organised on the ground, that we will do what we did in 1979 again.”
