The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has revealed that an amount of 1.5 million cedis has been allocated by the government for this year’s edition of the Green Ghana Day Project.
In 2021 and 2022, an amount of GHC 2 million was allocated by the government for this project. Fast forward to 2023, and the allocated amount for this same activity rose to 2.5 million cedis. However, this year’s edition has seen a decline in the allocated amount.
Samuel Abu Jinapor made this known while responding to a question posed to him at a press briefing at the Ministry of Information on Tuesday 4th June 2024.
“By and large, the funding sources are mostly private. Every year I write letters to corporate Ghana and they contribute, and we use that money to fund this undertaking.”
“But the Government of Ghana does chip in. The information I have is that in 2021 the government of Ghana allocated GHC2 million in 2022, GHC2 million in 2023, GHC2.5 million and this year. The government of Ghana has allocated GHC1.5 million. What we’re doing costs a lot of money,” the minister said.
Abu Jinapor reiterated that a target of 10 million tree seedlings will be planted on 7 June 2024, the Green Ghana Day, under the theme; “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”
The first edition of the Green Ghana Day celebration was held on 11th June 2021 and seven million trees were planted.
A total of 26 million trees were planted in the 2022 edition, while 10 million trees were planted during last year’s edition. To ensure a maximum survival rate, the ministry has decided to maintain the 2023 target of ten million trees.
