Abandoned storm drain poses risk to Kalariga, Northern Region

Residents of Kalariga experience great difficulty every time it rains. The problem can be blamed partly on the poor drainage system in the area

Residents of Kalariga in the Tamale metropolis of the Northern Region are making a passionate appeal to the government to fix their storm drain urgently before disaster strikes.

Asaase News gathers that the contractor abandoned the project midway and this poses a grave risk every time it rains.

The assemblyman for the area, Amadu Yahuza, told our correspondent, Mohammed Kamil Baba, that he does not understand why the project has come to a standstill.

The volume of water that gushes out from the culvert every time it rains overwhelms the bridge provided.

There is an urgent need to expand the bridge to allow free flow of water when it rains.

Amadu Yahuza made a passionate appeal to the government to come to the rescue of local people in Kalariga.

He said there is a COVED-19 isolation centre in the area and whenever it rains the whole area gets flooded.

The floodwater carries the debris downstream and this poses a grave health risk to people in the area.

Residents risk their lives when crossing to the other side. They want the government to come to their aid before disaster strike.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management OrganisationĀ (NADMO) in the Northern Region has said it has put in place measures to help reduce the impact of disasters in the region this year.

Alhaji Abdallah Abdul-Mumin, Northern Regional director of NADMO, said: ā€œSome of these measures include our regular sensitisation programmes on both print and electronic media on the kind of disasters we live with and how to prevent them.

ā€œWe are far advanced in our discussions with the Urban Roads, Ghana Highways Authority and Feeder Roads for the expansion of some major storm drains across the region to help avert the numerous flooding experienced in the region,ā€ he said.

Alhaji Abdallah Abdul-Mumin was speaking at a stakeholdersā€™ workshop to validate a draft Northern Regional Disaster Management Plan (NRDMP), as well as standard operating procedures (SOPs) to govern an emergency response in the Northern Region.
