Police at Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region have initiated investigations into a suspected arson case resulting in the death of a mother.
The incident occurred at Abuakwa Manhyia on Tuesday (14 May) at about 10am, following an altercation involving two brothers and their grandmother.
Reports say tensions escalated to the point where the grandmother sought police assistance out of fear for her life. During her absence, the two brothers, suspected to be mentally unstable, allegedly set fire to the three-bedroom house trapping their mother in the process. Her charred body was later discovered when firefighters completely battled the blaze.
The assembly member of the area Evans Opoku says the two siblings are currently in police custody assisting investigations.
“So, what he was doing was to burn the house and the grandmother too. Not knowing that the grandmother had left. So, before they realised someone was burnt it was the guy’s mother.
“They were two, so the police arrested them. The police said that the two people caused the incident, so they arrested them yesterday.”
“So far all the occupants have been evacuated. We have also reported the matter to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to facilitate with other stakeholders to determine the structural integrity of the house and it could possibly be pulled down for safety reasons”, Opoku told Asaase News.
