Accra 2023: African Games LOC have laid foundation for future, says Ofosu Asare
In March 2024, Ghana hosted the multi-sport event for the first time with nine venues with over 5000 athletes competing in 29 sporting disciplines for the first time in the African Games
The chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2023 African Games Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare says the committee has laid the foundation for Ghana to build on in the future, he told the media on Monday (30, September)
In March 2024, Ghana hosted the multi-sport event for the first time with nine venues with over 5000 athletes competing in 29 sporting disciplines for the first time in the African Games- eight served as Olympic Qualifier.
He highlighted the successes of hosting international competitions, emphasising the absence of food poisoning incidents and the positive feedback from dignitaries, including a video from Nigeria praising the food.
“We have achieved a lot,” he said.
“We never had food poisoning. There was not a single incident of food poisoning during the games. Everybody who came, from the president to the lowest person who tasted our food was very okay with it. The dignitaries who came, nobody complained”
He highlighted the refurbishment of various facilities, including laboratories and stadiums, which contributed to winning the opportunity to host future events.
“Now, because of the facilities, we have the opportunity to host in 2026. With the stadia closed when you go to Legon Stadium which we refurbished how many clubs are playing there? So assuming that the stadium had not been refurbished for the games. Where will these 4 clubs be playing their home games now?”
The LOC also refuted claims regarding the processes and amounts involved in awarding three contracts ahead of the multi-sport competition.
According to the LOC, the country’s procurement laws, particularly the Public Procurement Act, 2002 (Act 663) as amended by Act 914, were followed in the contract award process which required parliamentary approval.
The chair of the LOC expressed surprise that the chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee for Youth, Sports, and Tourism, Kobena Mensah Woyome, who had held several meetings with the LOC, had become the source of the false claims.
