The UNDP is set to give a grant of GHC50,000 each to some 18 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as part of efforts for them to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The focus will be on the youth and women selected from five districts and municipalities in Ghana including Kumasi, Jomoro, Kassena Nankana and Savelugu.
The economic analyst with UNDP, Sylvia Sefakor Senu told journalists on the sideline of the training workshop that, “the support actually is an integrated support we’re offering, it dates back to when COVID started.”
“We started looking at COVID recovery plans,” she said. “What it meant was that the assembly needed to factor in diseases and interruptions such as COVID in their planning so that when it happens, they’re not totally thrown off.”
The national coordinator of AfCFTA, Fareed Kwesi Arthur encouraged the youth and traders to make good use of the AfCFTA initiative.
Arthur also urged young people in the SMEs to consider partnership or mergers to grow their business.
For his part, Ketu South municipal coordinating director, Gilbert Enyonam Avemegah called on the youth to “identify chances in economic crisis” and desist from “complaining about it”.
Agencies which participated in the training include Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA).
