Afenyo-Markin urges media to focus on national issues ahead of elections

With the country heading to the polls in December, Afenyo-Markin emphasised the crucial role of the media in highlighting topics that impact the well-being of the populace

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the media to focus on issues that matter to Ghanaians rather than engaging in divisive partisan politics.

With the country heading to the polls in December, Afenyo-Markin emphasised the crucial role of the press in highlighting topics that impact the well-being of the populace.

Speaking at Parliament on Monday (10 June), Afenyo-Markin implored the media to steer political discourse away from confrontational and unproductive debates.

“When we come on your airwaves and we are shouting, yelling at each other, and insulting, stop us. Remind us that, honourable, this is not the way to go,” he said.

He emphasised the media’s duty to the public, urging them to act as a check on political rhetoric and ensure that the conversation remains focused on tangible outcomes and community needs.

“What are the issues? Your people need schools. Your teachers need laptops. There is poverty in your backyard. What are you doing to promote industry? So that we don’t come and be doing the name-calling, and we think that we can take the people for granted. We should help.”

Afenyo-Markin also called on journalists to maintain their watchdog role by holding the government accountable while also acknowledging its achievements.

“It’s an election year, nothing stops you from commending government on its major breakthroughs. Whereas you also point to us the challenges in the various communities. For me, we need this. We need this so that we can attend to the people.”
