Afro-soul singer Darkoa: I want to become a household name

Upcoming Ghanaian afro-soul singer Darkoa has said she wants her name to be on everyone’s lips and her songs the first anyone listens to, regardless of the occasion.

She shared this dream with Naa Ashorkor on Asaase Radio’s Between Hours, saying that, “sometimes when I think about it I’m like… this dream, are you sure? But then nothing is impossible.”

The 22-year-old disclosed that growing up, she wanted to be a model, a singer and also take after her late father to be an accountant. However, she dropped the dream to be an accountant due to mathematics anxiety.

She has decided instead to pursue the singing career, though she says she “loves making jewelry and looking forward to opening a salon or something hair too” because she is also a hair stylist.

“There are a lot of things I want to do aside music,” Darkoa said.

“Rough and smooth”

The young songstress who completed senior high school in 2017 and started singing in earnest in 2019 describes her journey in the music industry so far as “rough and smooth.”

“The rough part; people wanting you to come and sing at their shows and sometimes they don’t even want to take care of at least your transportation, they don’t consider the fact that you are coming from somewhere far, or you are not even trying to charge them for anything, but then the least they can do is to at least sort your transportation.

“But… they don’t care. So it’s kind of tough because you don’t know how the person struggled to get there to sing for your show to go on. Something like that, so sometimes it can be a bit of a problem,” she explained.

However, that situation has changed as Darkoa said she is now paid for her performances at events.
She went on to say that when she started singing it was all about her passion for music and “any time people ask me so, ‘why are you doing music,’ I’ll be like, “I’m in love with it,” and they’re like, ‘the money’ and I’m like, “ooh I don’t care about the money.” But along the line, I realised I have to care about the money.”

When asked if she is looking to work with any famous Ghanaian artists, Darkoa named Efya and Becca. She also sent a message to afro-pop singer King Promise.

“Please someone should tell King Promise that I’m looking for him. I need him on my song… the original King Promise, no faking, I need him on my song.”
