Akomea: Mahama’s comment on judiciary “scandalous”

Nana Akomea of the NPP says the comment is a declaration of John Mahama's intent to politicise the judiciary if he wins the 2024 election

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Nana Akomea, has condemned former president John Mahama over his recent comment on the judiciary and wants Ghanaians to call him out.

Mahama at the third annual lawyers’ conference of the NDC on Saturday, 3 September 2023, in Akosombo claimed that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has packed the courts, indicating that NDC lawyers should be ready to be appointed as judges to bring a balance should he win the 2024 elections.

What Mahama said

“We know they (the ruling government) have packed the courts because they fear accountability when they leave office. We must be prepared as NDC lawyers to go to the bench to balance the current situation,” Mahama said.

Akomea said the comment is a declaration of Mahama’s intent to politicise the judiciary if he wins the 2024 election.

Reacting to the development on Asaase 99.5 Accra’s news analysis show, The Forum, on Saturday (16 September), Akomea said the comment is scandalous.

“So, what President Mahama has said should be roundly condemned by every right thinking person in society,” he said.

“How could he even think of it, that ‘I am going to appoint as a policy, NDC people’ and announce it and actually tell partisan association of NDC lawyers that ‘I am going to appoint them’. It is scandalous.

“So, what is going to happen is that if there is elections next year and if President Mahama wins, every appointment he makes is going to be seen as partisan. What it does is that it destroys the image of the judiciary,” Akomea added.
