Akosombo Dam spillage: We’ll roll out measures to mitigate impact, says Krapa

The Minister of State-designate for the Ministry of Energy has assured measures have been put in place to mitigate the impact of the planned spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam.

Herbert Krapa gave the assurance when he appeared before Parliament’s appointments committee for vetting on Tuesday (9 July).

“The lesson has been learnt, so what VRA is doing this year, owing to the forecast that we have seen showing that the water level is still going to rise, VRA is engaging stakeholders early and sensitising them.

“But more importantly VRA envisages that if and when the spilling starts, it will start very early enough that it will cover a long period of time that the volumes that will be spilled daily will be small over a longer period.”

“And we hope that we will not see the displacement that we saw last year So that is the plan, VRA is going ahead with the stakeholder consultations and the sensitisations and the ministry and central government will work closely with them to ensure that the programme that they have put in place to mitigate the impact of the spill and also ensure the integrity of the dam will be executed, according to plan,” Krapa said.

At least 31,000 individuals in nine districts were displaced after excess water was spilled from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Crops were destroyed, schools shut and the economy came to a standstill in Mepe – the epicentre in the Volta Region – and parts of the Eastern and Greater Accra regions after the dams overflowed at Akosombo and Kpong last year.
