President Nana Akufo-Addo and his vice-president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, have commiserated with the people of Dagbon on the passing of the Mion Lana, Naa Abdulai Mahamadu III.
The chief passed on three years after he took the Mion skin, one of the most prominent in the Dagbon Traditional Area of the Northern Region.
He died on Tuesday (16 August 2022) in Accra at the age of 48 after a short illness.
Sad moment
“It is a sad day for Dagbon, and I express my deep, sincere condolences to the Ya Naa, the family of the late Mion Lana, and the people of Dagbon,” President Akufo-Addo posted on Facebook.
“It is my hope that, when the funeral rites are concluded, all will co-operate to find a worthy successor to him as Mion Lana. It will be one of the best ways we can pay tribute and honour to his memory.”
For his part, Dr Bawumia said: “Yesterday, I received news of the sudden death of one of the charismatic chiefs of the Dagbon Kingdom, Mioŋ Lana Alhaji Mahamadu Abdulai.
“I, together with the Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, visited the Korle-Bu Hospital to pay our last respects to the late chief and to commiserate with his immediate family.
“I send my condolences to the king, chiefs and people of Dagbon, to the immediate family of the late chief and the wider Abudu family of Dagbon on this great loss. May Allah accept his soul and grant him paradise.”
Meanwhile, the Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, has also extended his condolence to the Abudu family.
“My wife Patricia and I join loved ones and the people of Dagbon to mourn the loss of the Mion Lana, Naa Abdulai III, known in private life as Mahamadu Abdulai.
“Naa Abdulai III was a wise, courageous, and peace loving leader who worked tirelessly for the good of the people of Dagbon and the entire country.
“His untimely passing away evokes a deep sense of sadness in all of us. Verily we belong to Allah and verily to him do we return. May Almighty Allah dwell him in Jannatul Firdaus,” Kyerematen posted on Facebook.
Before his enskinment as the Mion Lana, Naa Abdulai was the Bolin Lana, a position he had held since the age of 14. He was in line to succeed the Ya Naa, the Dagbon overlord, under the traditional rotating chieftaincy system.
Naa Abdulai left behind four wives and 12 children.
