Akufo-Addo commissions Salaga Water Supply Project
The new Salaga water supply system replaces one built in 1962 and geared towards rural needs. It can supply up to 20,000 gallons of water per day
President Akufo-Addo commissioned the Salaga Water Supply Project yesterday (Monday 12 July 2021) as well as a newly built AstroTurf football pitch for residents of Salaga during his two-day tour of the Savannah Region.
During a working visit to Salaga by the president in 2017, he noted that demand for water in the town had outstripped supply and directed Ghana Water Co Ltd to augment the town’s supply system, built in 1962.
His instruction was to upgrade the system from one that met the needs of a rural community to a network adequate to meet urban demands.
With the completion of the project, at a cost of GHC14 million, Salaga’s water system can now supply 20,000 gallons of water per day to residents and businesses.
The water project involved the rehabilitation of two steel elevated tanks, construction of 21 standpipes, provision of ten storage tanks in Salaga, Kpembe and Masaka, the rehabilitation of the existing water treatment plant structure, and replacement of the old treated water transmission pipelines.
Two Ghana Water Co Ltd staff quarters in Salaga were also renovated and a new 100KVA transformer installed. A new booster station was further erected to distribute water from the new concrete underground tank at “Nkwanta Junction” to the new storage tank in Kpembe.
Sporting talent
President Akufo-Addo also commissioned the Salaga AstroTurf football pitch, a project launched in 2018 by the then Ministry of Inner-City and Zongo Development.
Built at a cost of GHC1.9 million, the AstroTurf pitch in Salaga, like those in Madina (Accra), Bolgatanga, Kyebi, Walewale, Bolgatanga and Yeji, will promote access to sports facilities in the Salaga municipality, and help unearth local sporting talent.
President Akufo-Addo admonished the youth to make good use of the facility, and called on the Salaga Muncipal Assembly to undertake routine maintenance to ensure that sports enthusiasts get good use out of the pitch and so that it lasts long.
Bunjai-Fufulso road
President Akufo-Addo also inspected work on the 71-kilometre Bunjai-to-Fufulso road, which connects Bunjai to Yapei through Tuluwe and Kusawgu to Fufulso.
The new road will help connect the eastern and western parts of the Savannah Region without commuters having to take a detour through Tamale in the Northern Region. It will also reduce the travel distance between Damongo and Salaga by approximately 60 kilometres and assist food distribution from across the Savannah Region to the Bono and Ahafo Regions.
Work on the project started in late February 2020 and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2023.
The contractor, M/S Mawums Ltd, said the project is 30% complete, and assured the president that it will be completed on time.
