Akufo-Addo to GAF Council: Help achieve my vision of building a contented Armed Forces 

Nana Akufo-Addo says his vision for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is to build a body of "contented soldiers"

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged the Governing Council (Armed Forces Council) of the Ghana Armed Forces to support the vision of his administration to build a contented men and women of the military in the country.

The Armed Forces Council derives its mandate from Article 212 (2) of the 1992 constitution which states that “the President may, acting in accordance with the advice of the Armed Forces Council, appoint officers of the Armed Forces who shall be given such command as the Armed Forces Council shall determine.

(3) The President shall, acting in accordance with the advice of the Armed Forces Council, grant commissions to officers of the Armed Forces and (4), subject to clause (3) of this article, the power to appoint persons to hold or to act in an office in the Armed Forces shall vest in the President, acting in accordance with the advice of the Armed Forces Council.

Addressing the newly inaugurated Governing Council of the Ghana Armed Forces after administering the oath of secrecy and the official oath to them in Accra on Tuesday (26 October), President Akufo-Addo said his government’s “vision for the armed forces is aptly summarised by the quote attributed to the legendary British Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, one of the most inspirational commanders of the second world war.

“He said, and it is worth quoting: ‘the soldier of who is well provided for, who is not disturbed by petty and unnecessary inconveniences, who knows that everything possible is being done for him, who is well clothed and well fed, is a contented soldier'”.

“Achieving such a state for the officers, men and women of the Armed Forces will remain the focus of my government and I urge you to help in the realization of this vision,” he added.

In his response, the Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, chairperson of the Armed Force Council noted that the governing council will work to create a safe environment for everyone in the country.

“We need to do this through the strict standards of compliance, governance and oversight improvement of the troops. On behalf of my colleague council members, we pledge to you our full and dedicated loyalty to you as our commander in chief,” Dr Bawumia said.

The members of the Governing Council of the Ghana Armed Forces are: chairperson and President’s nominee Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Others are Minister of Defence, Dominic B.A. Nitiwul, Minister of Interior, Ambrose Derry, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, and Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of Defence Staff.

The rest are Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Frank Hanson, Chief of the Air Staff, Majar General T. Oppong – Preprah, Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, Chief of Naval Staff, Brigadier General R.O. Sackey (Rtd), President’s Nominee, Colonel C.B. Ankomah-Danso (Rtd) President’s Nominee and Master Warrant 0fficer Daniel Addo, Senior Warrant Officer.
