A 25-year-old “galamseyer” in Patakrↄ a community in the Amenfi West Municipality, of the Western Region lost his life during a scuffle with a fellow “galamseyer” who sustained machete wounds.
The deceased, whose body is currently at the Samatex Hospital mortuary in Samraboi, is said to have inflicted the machete wounds on another resident during the misunderstanding.
According to sources, the deceased and his three colleagues were sharing their proceeds from what they got from gold sales when the suspect, in his 30s, responded by calling open money sharing “primitive” and making other derogatory remarks.
This comment triggered a hefty slap from the deceased and this sparked the misunderstanding.
Enraged at the turn of events, friends of the person who sustained machete wounds retaliated with vengeance, which resulted in the demise of the 25-year-old illegal miner.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 10 August 2024.
The suspect is reportedly receiving treatment under police protection at the Samatex Hospital in Samraboi.
Such deadly fights are a common feature in most mining communities in Amenfi West, with some going unreported for authorities to act.
Residents at Patakrↄ, Asuohyiam, Adiemra, James Boah and adjoining communities say, they are unsafe living in these communities.
