Amonebafe Borenyi I announced as new king of Gonjaland

The newly-elected Yagbonwura, who is the current chief for Tuluwe traditional area, will be enskinned in the coming weeks

The current chief of Tuluwe traditional area Amonebafe Borenyi I has been announced as the new overlord of the Gonja Kingdom in the Savannah Region.

Yagbonwura Amonebafe Borenyi I replaces the late overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Professor Tuntunba Bor-esa l, who died at the Jakpa palace in Damongo on Sunday 5 February 2023 after a short illness.

Congratulatory messages

Former president John Mahama has congratulated the new king who is due to be enskinned in the coming weeks.

“Congratulations to Yagbonwura Amonebafe Borenyi I, the new King of Gonjaland,” Mahama wrote on Facebook on Monday (27 February).

“I am proud that the time-tested traditions of Gonjaland, handed to us by the founder of Gonja, Ndewura Sumaila Jakpa, has once again worked seamlessly and peacefully installed the successor to our late overlord, HRM Yiram, Yagbonwura Sulemana Jakpa Tuntumba Boresa I.”

“I wish our new King long life and a successful reign that will deliver tangible development to our people,” he added.

Meanwhile, the MP for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor has said he is confident the new Yagbonwura will continue to lead the people of Gonjaland in absolute peace and unity.

“I congratulate the newly nominated overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Yiram Amonebafe Borenyi I, on his historic nomination to the great Yagbon Skin.The time-tested customs and traditions of Gonjaland have seen the smooth and peaceful nomination of a successor to the Yagbon, and we all remain proud of this feat,” Jinapor said.

“We are confident that the new King will continue to lead the people of Gonjaland in absolute peace and unity.
We pray for God’s continuous protection for him and wish him a peaceful and successful reign,” he posted on Facebook.
