Artist managers need to develop themselves to earn respect, says entertainment enthusiast

Francis Nutakor advises artists managers to develop themselves so that they can manage the careers of others properly

Theatre consultant and entertainment enthusiast Francis Nutakor is advising artist managers to develop their crafts in order to effectively manage the careers of their artists.

Speaking on the Entertainment Roundtable on Saturday (6 July) Nutakor explained that “people go to school to learn these things [artist management].”

“You need to understand how to deal with people, human relationships, how to manage the anger of your artist, etc, but sometimes it happens that you are working with the biggest artist in town so it’s all about the money.”

According to him, artist managers must first be huge fans of their artists.

“You see, sometimes it starts like you are the artist’s biggest fan I will use myself as an example; working with Clemento Suarez, I felt at a point I was his biggest fan; I didn’t see anybody who was laughing at his jokes more than me.”

He added, “In Ghana, I don’t know anybody who has managed more comedians than I have; ask anybody. All I want to say to anybody managing an artist is that, it is work.”

“Some artist managers don’t even know the amount their artists charge [for events]. You call them and they will tell you they will get back to you because they are now going to ask their artists.

“Sometimes they don’t even do soundcheck… You don’t need to know everything about managing an artist; just know the basis and outsource them so that when someone is talking to you about copyright, you know what it entails.”

“But most artist managers don’t know anything about sound nowadays,” Nutakor added.
