A respected strategic communications and stakeholder engagement specialist, Nkiru Balonwu, has been appointed to the board of directors of Asaase Broadcasting Company (ABC) Ltd, owners of Asaase Radio.

Reacting to her appointment, Dr Balonwu, the founder and creative director of the Africa Soft Power Project, told Asaase News, “I am super excited and honoured to be appointed to serve on the board of Asaase Radio, a station determined to showcase Africa’s soft power reach.

“I see this as also reflecting Asaase’s focus as a truly pan-Africanist station and I hope to contribute to deepening this.”

The decision to appoint one of Africa’s leading women to join Asaase Radio was taken at a board meeting held on 7 September. She replaces Isaac Osei Bonsu, who resigned from the board due to other commitments.

Her appointment is part of a wider strategy to arm the board of one of Ghana’s leading English-speaking radio stations with men and women who come with rich and diverse experience.

Women in leadership

Dr Balonwu acquired her PhD in law at the School of Law, University of California, Berkeley; her Masters of Laws at University College, London, and a certificate in strategic communications at Columbia University, New York.

Based in Lagos, Dr Balonwu has over 20 years’ professional experience advising organisations on gender equality policy, social impact strategies, strategic communications and strategic cause partnerships. Her work includes a strong focus on women in leadership and women’s issues, as well as the cultural and creative industries.

She is the chairperson of African Women on Board, an independent director on the board of FIN Insurance, and a board member of the Rele Gallery. Dr Balonwu also chairs the Sickle Cell Foundation of Nigeria.

“We are delighted to have her on board and she will be crucial to helping Asaase develop and implement our strategy to bring Africa to the world through Asaase, Africa to Ghana, and Ghana to the rest of the world,” said Gabby Otchere-Darko, the chairman of ABC.
