Asaase Radio’s Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe wins Energy Media Personality of the Year award

This is the second time that the broadcaster has won the award, making him the only person to have accomplished such a feat

Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe, the host of Energy 101 on Asaase 99.5 Accra, has won the Energy Media Personality of the Year prize for the second time at the 2024 Think Energy SDG Awards.

The 5th African Energy and Sustainability Awards, which took place in Akosombo in the Eastern Region, recognised 30 individuals and institutions which have contributed significantly, in diverse ways, to highlighting sustainable energy and ESG practices across Ghana over the past year.

Speaking to Winifred Lartey of Asaase 99.5 Accra, Emmanuel Aboagye-Wiafe said, “I’m very, very happy that we’ve won the Think Energy SDG awards once again, for the second time running.

“I just want to thank God so much for the wisdom and sense of inspiration to lead this programme and I also want to congratulate my team members because it was a joint win. Like I always say, they helped in various ways to make this show successful.”

Aboagye-Wiafe added,I thank management, too, for their efforts to help me succeed always. And I thank the chairman of Asaase, Gabby Otchere-Darko, who designed this programme for me to host.

The chief executive of Think Energy Media, Humphrey Tetteh, said the timing of this year’s awards was significant, as the event brought together political party representatives to talk about their manifesto provisions on the green economy, a testament to the growing recognition of sustainability as a cornerstone of Africa’s development.

“We won’t just talk, we will take action. We will launch initiatives, forge partnerships and make commitments that will propel our continent towards a sustainable energy future,” Tetteh said.

Other awards

Aboagye-Wiafe has also won the Think Energy SDG Award 2023, as well as honours at the Ghana Energy Awards 2023 and an international award for nuclear reporting by Rosatom. In addition, he has earned nominations for the Ghana Energy Awards 2024 and the 2024 Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana Awards.

The nominations for this year’s Energy Media Personality Award featured some distinguished media figures, including Kwame Sefa Kayi of Peace FM, Bernard Avle of Citi FM, Kojo Yankson of Joy FM and the television presenter Nana Yaa Brefo.

The theme for this year’s event was “The Financial Sustainability of Africa’s Energy Transition: the Role of ESG in Attracting Investments”.

The guest of honour at the awards ceremony was the Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutuwum. He praised Ghana’s efforts to meet the SDG goals on education before the 2030 deadline.

“Ghana is ready to shock the world … I look at all the SDGs 4 all the way down and we are on track to meeting every one of them – every single one of them.

“I’ll give you an example: 4.1. I’m sure all girls and boys complete three years of equitable and quality primary and secondary educations.

“Just a week ago we got notice from the United Nations Human Rights Council for Ghana to co-sponsor a resolution that will lead to a treaty that will ensure that everyone in the world is guaranteed secondary education,” the minister said.

Adutwum also revealed that cabinet has approved a bill that will require all children to benefit from free and compulsory secondary education.

“Our cabinet has approved a bill which is going to Parliament now and secondary education is going to be free and compulsory for every child in Ghana. So 4.1, we are there.”

The 2024 Think Energy Awards were powered by Deloitte, which also provided expert statistical analysis for the various nominations.

Asaase Radio’s Energy 101 is on course to win honours in this year’s Ghana’s Energy Awards, which will be held in November, and is vying for a spot in the Chartered Institute of Ghana Awards under the Most Popular Radio Programme category.
