Asafa Powell outlines remedies for Ghana Athletics

The Jamaican former world athletics record holder Asafa Powell has outlined measures to improve athletics in Ghana.

Speaking to reporters at a speed clinic today at the University of Ghana, Legon, Powell reiterated his disappointment in the low level of infrastructure in the country.

“Well, the first thing is just to show interest,” said the record-beating sprinter. “There has to be interest in the sports.

“You have to start from a very young age and find the athletes at a very young age. You have to put things in place for those athletes, the young athletes – from age six to seven, maybe ten, you have a programme for them. Then maybe at age ten to 20, you have another programme for them.”

Powell, who returned to Ghana seven months ahead of his next scheduled visit, which was supposed to take place in December, also highlighted the essence of sports infrastructure.

“I would say, number four, you improve the infrastructure. Next you show support all the way, whether it’s just seeing them or giving them monetary gifts.”

He, however, expressed faith in the pool of talent he had seen during his visits to Ghana.

“I’m sure if you didn’t know my name or anything, you wouldn’t think I’m from Ghana, so, there’s no difference. I don’t think there’s any difference between Jamaica and Ghana; we’re just the same, we’re the same people.

“I’m sure you can walk on the street and see somebody that looks just like Asafa Powell somewhere here in Ghana. So, the talent is definitely here.”
