Asah-Asante to government: Resolve concerns of pensioners or risk losing 2024 elections

The Pensioner Bondholders Forum this week resumed picketing at the Finance Ministry over the payment of their funds in the just ended Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP)

The director of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante is warning the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks losing the 2024 elections if it does not immediately resolve the concerns of the Pensioner Bondholders Forum.

The warning is in reference to the resumption of picketing at the Ministry of Finance by the Pensioner Bondholders Forum over the payment of their funds in the just-ended Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

Speaking in an interview with Joy News Tv on Wednesday (10 May), Asah-Asante said the government must be sensitive to the pensioners.

“If people picket, they take decisions, use public opinion channels such as demonstrations, strikes and all that and you don’t listen, the last option is voting.

“You vote them out, and then they learn sense from this, so we are saying that listen to them, do the best for them, especially when they have given their money to you to run the affairs of the state.”

“It’s their share of that contract, you must give it to them, so why do you want to force them to do things that ordinarily, they are not supposed to do, it is unfair and government must be sensitive to this,” Asah-Asante said.
