Professor Ato Quayson, the cultural historian and professor of English at Stanford University in the United States wants the forts and castles on Ghana’s coastlines to be removed.
Quayson said the colonial structures, which have been left in a dilapidated state are not the best for the country’s history and must be removed to pave way for proper development.
Appearing on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (15 August) Quayson said Ghana must take a cue from Senegal in developing its coastlines.
“If we are going to have a coastline development like what is in Dakar then I believe that we need to remove the forts and castles,” he said.
“I know that it will be difficult to remove the castle which represents the ‘seat’ of government but if we want to develop our coast then we need to remove them.
“Our leadership should go to Dakar and they will open their mouths in wonder at the sheer development that their coastline has achieved, especially when you compare it to ours,” Quayson said.
