The MP for Bawku Central Mahama Ayariga has called for strict law enforcement strategy to deal with tensions in the area following recent clashes in the community.
The people of Bawku in the Upper East Region are currently under curfew following threats of insecurity in the area. Chieftaincy clashes were renewed on 27 December 2021 resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of properties.
Speaking on the development in his constituency, Ayariga said the security agencies must ensure stringent adherence to law and order in Bawku.
According to him, “the fundamental issue is the law enforcement. There’s really nothing beyond law enforcement and if law enforcement institutions do their work, I’m sure that we’ll be able to deal with their problem.”
“Those people obey the law, and if the law enforcement agencies treat it as a law enforcement matter and do their work, I’m sure we’ll be able to ensure law and order in all these communities. Throughout the years what I consider to be fundamentally the problem is that we have failed to enforce laws,” the lawmaker told the host of The Big Bulletin Beatrice Adu on Thursday (30 December).
Ceasefire
The government has called on all stakeholders in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to ceasefire and resort to dialogue for calm to prevail.
A statement from the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs said, “the status of the Paramount Chief of Bawku has been settled by the Supreme Court of Ghana in the celebrated case in April 2003.”
The statement further urged all parties to “desist from actions and pronouncements that can further escalate tensions and violence in the area.”
According to the ministry’s statement, the security agencies have been authorised to deal with anyone who disturbs the peace of the area.
