The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, is committed to ensuring that Nation Builders Corps (NaBCO) trainees receive the arrears owed them, Salam Mustapha, the national youth organiser for the NPP.
During a press conference in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region, Mustapha explained that NaBCO was the government’s temporary and immediate response to rising unemployment in the country.
“When we came into office, there was the Unemployed Graduates Association, and every year, we were churning out 100,000 graduates. If we left all of these people sitting at home, I can tell you that it would be a national security threat. We saw the Arab Spring in 2011. Any country that does not take an interest in youth unemployment is dealing with a disastrous situation. Upon taking office, we recognised that we had to do something deliberate about it,” he said.
Under the scheme, one hundred thousand young people were engaged for a three-year period. Mustapha noted that more than thirty thousand of these participants have been permanently employed, reiterating that the issue of unpaid arrears has not been overlooked.
Currently, NaBCO trainees are owed approximately nine months of arrears.
“There is, of course, a challenge with arrears. I have personally had conversations with the leadership of NaBCO and have taken it to higher authorities. I know the flagbearer has taken an interest in the matter and has brought it up with the Ministry of Finance, and I am very sure we will find a solution to it,” he said.
Mustapha also called for support for the NPP to retain power, highlighting the promise of creating two million jobs during the first term of governance.
