Bawumia is the only presidential candidate who has boldly declared his stance on LGBTQ, says aide

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday emphatically rejected the practice of LGBTQ in the country

Mahamudu Bawumia is the only presidential candidate who has strongly and clearly declared his stance on the raging debate on LGBTQ in Ghana ahead of the 2024 elections, Akbar Khomeini, aide at the Office of the Vice-President has said.

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday emphatically rejected the practice of LGBTQ in the country.

Addressing Muslims in Kumasi during the observation of Eid prayers on Thursday (11 April), the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said he does not support the practice of LGBTQ, and his belief is consistent with the stance of his religion, Islam, other religions, as well as the social and cultural norms of Ghana.

He said: “… First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality.

“Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith. The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no “ifs” or “buts”. No shades of grey,” the vice-president said.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (12 April), Khomeini said the timing for the declaration of Bawumia’s stance on the LGBTQ issue was strategic.

“As a friend of the Christian community, he cannot be in support of that which they are opposed to and so he decided that yesterday was the opportune time to make his position known to the Ghanaian people,” he said.

Khomeini added “And he did so in an unequivocal language… I dare say that all those seeking to be president in 2024, it is the NPP’s presidential candidate who has provided the strongest and clearest message on the question of LGBTQ.”
