Bawumia to launch Kayeyei Empowerment Programme today

There are about 100,000 female head porters in Ghana with over 70% in Accra due to high demand for their services

Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia is expected to officially roll out a skills training module dubbed “Kayeyei Empowerment Programme” for head porters also known as Kayayei at the Madina Social Centre later today (21 May).

The initiative seeks to upskill head porters, provide transitional job avenues, and improve their socio-economic well-being.

Fulfilled hostel promise

In January, communication director of Bawumia campaign team , Dennis Miracles Aboagye announced that Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia was set to fulfill his promise to provide accommodation for head porters, commonly known as Kayayei.

In a post shared on [Platform X], Miracles Aboagye revealed that two hostel facilities have been completed and are ready to be commissioned.

The accommodation facilities, located in Madina and Ashaiman, suburbs of the capital city Accra, are not only designed to serve as hostels for Kayayei but will also function as training centers for these head porters.

This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to address the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in society and provides a positive outlook for the future of Kayayei in terms of both shelter and skill development.
