A Development Economist and a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Policy Studies (CSPS) at the College of Humanities, University of Ghana, Dr George Domfe, has said that Bawumia will be a listening president if he gets the nod to lead Ghana in the 2024 elections.
In a one-on-one interview with Gordon Asare-Bediako on his ‘Bɛ Kyerɛ Mu’ morning show on Movement Television on Saturday, July 6, 2024, Dr Domfe indicated that apart from all the other factors that might have accounted for the reasons informing Dr Bawumia’s choice of running mate in Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, he relied heavily on what party members wanted.
“Vice President Bawumia listened to the members of the NPP in his selection of Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh. All the research works conducted by different research groups pointed to the larger majority of NPP members wanting Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh” he opined.
He explained further that this is significant as it gives a fair idea how Dr Bawumia would handle the concerns of the ordinary Ghanaian as President.
“He will be a listening President looking at how he listened to the desires of the party’s people to name Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh as his running mate. This is what Ghanaians need in a leader, the one who listens to our concerns and act upon them” he stated.
The research kingpin stated that in all the research his outfit conducted and other research groups, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh emerged the favorite amongst all those whose names came up for the running mate slot.
Dr Domfe further indicated that the choice of running mate from the Ashanti Region is the best decision to have been taken by Vice President Bawumia due to the pivotal role the region plays in the electoral fortunes of the NPP.
The Ashanti Region, he averred, singlehandedly held the fort for the NPP in the 2020 elections and could prove to be the region to ensure that the NPP breaks the 8 as the party envisages.
