Bawumia’s choice of running mate not final, NPP national council will have to approve, says Ayikoi Otoo

There has been growing speculation regarding the extension granted the NPP presidential candidate to select his running mate, which has led to assumptions of automatic confirmation

Former Attorney General Ayikoi Otoo has clarified that Vice-President Mahamadu Bawumia‘s choice of a running mate for the upcoming elections will not be final until it receives approval from the national council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

There has been growing speculation regarding the extension granted the NPP presidential candidate to select his running mate, which has led to assumptions of automatic confirmation.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, the former attorney general, who is also a member of the Greater Accra NPP council of elders, emphasised that the NPP national council holds the authority to determine the suitability of the running mate options presented by the flagbearer.

“The choice of a running mate by Vice-President Bawumia will not be final until it is approved by the national council of the New Patriotic Party,” Ayikoi Otoo said.

“What happens in the true state of affairs is he [Vice-President bawumia] sends the name there for them to look at it and to decide whether they like it or not. So who is actually making the choice?”

With the NPP’s national council holding the authority to determine the suitability of the running mate options, the focus now shifts to the internal workings of the party as it prepares for the upcoming elections.

Vice-President Bawumia’s decision, once made, will undergo scrutiny and approval by the party’s highest decision-making body.
