Black Bombers arrive in Bangkok ahead of World Olympic Boxing Qualifier

This will be the Black Bombers' final opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, have arrived in Bangkok, Thailand, with their sights set on securing qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifier (24 May–2 June).

The six-strong squad, led by head coach Ofori Asare, boasts a mix of experience and youthful talent. Among them are decorated pugilists Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey (flyweight) and Amadu Mohammed (featherweight), who clinched gold and bronze medals, respectively, at the 13th African Games.

Light middleweight Henry Malm, super heavyweight Mark Kodjovi Ahondjo and 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Joseph Commey (super lightweight) complete the male contingent. US-based Ornella Sathoud (middleweight) flies the flag for the women’s team.

This qualifier represents the Black Bombers’ final chance to punch their ticket to Paris. Previous attempts at the African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal (September 2023) and the first World Qualifier in Busto Arsizio, Italy (February 2024) proved unsuccessful.

Failure to qualify in Bangkok would mark the first time since 2004 that Ghana hasn’t sent boxers to the Olympic Games.
