Black Sharks drawn in Group A of 2024 BSAFCON
Ghana faces tough group opponents Egypt, Morocco, and Tanzania in quest for a place at the 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup
Ghana’s senior men’s beach soccer team, the Black Sharks, have been drawn into a challenging Group A for the 2024 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (BSAFCON), which will be held in Egypt from 19-24 October 2024.
The draw, conducted on Thursday (19 September) in Hurghada, Egypt, sees the Black Sharks up against formidable opponents: Morocco, who finished third in the last tournament, Tanzania, and hosts Egypt, the 2022 runners-up.
This will mark Ghana’s fourth appearance in the competition; the Sharks last competed in the BSAFCON in 2016, finishing seventh—their joint-best performance to date.
Despite their efforts, they failed to secure a win in that edition, losing to Côte d’Ivoire (0-5), Egypt (4-5), and then-hosts Nigeria (3-4) in the group stage.
The knockout rounds did not improve their fortunes, with a 4-8 defeat to Madagascar in the fifth-place semi-final before securing seventh place via a walkover victory against Libya.
However, head coach Daniel Kotey remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances this time around. Speaking after the draw, he said, “We respect all our opponents, but we are ready to showcase our talent and aim for the best in the tournament.”
“I am confident that my team can match up against the other teams in Group A, and we have what it takes to compete against the best on the continent.”
The Black Sharks will begin their 2024 campaign against hosts Egypt on Saturday (19 October), in what promises to be an exciting opener.
Their next matches in the group stage will see them face Morocco on Monday (21 October) and Tanzania on Tuesday (22 October).
The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, with the finalists securing qualification for the 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, which will be held in Africa for the first time, hosted by the Seychelles.
