Black Starlets beat Benin 2-0 in WAFU Zone B U-17 second group game

Laryea Kingston's boys beat Benin to not only top Group A but maintain a 100% record ahead of the semi-finals on Saturday (25 May)

Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, the Black Starlets, maintained their perfect record in the 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Benin on Tuesday (21 May).

The win at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra sees the Starlets finish at the top of Group A.

Laryea Kingston’s side started brightly, taking the lead through a delightful chipped effort from Mark Kagawa Mensah in the 19th minute.

Just three minutes later, Ayamga Theophilus doubled Ghana’s advantage, raising hopes of a repeat of their opening day 5-1 thrashing of Côte d’Ivoire.

However, Benin emerged as a stronger force in the second half, carving out several clear-cut opportunities.

But they were unable to find a way past Ghana’s resolute goalkeeper, Michael Armah. The Starlets themselves spurned chances to extend their lead in the second period.

Ghana’s triumph over Benin secures the top spot in Group A and maintains their 100% record in the tournament.

Their semi-final opponents will be revealed on Wednesday (22 May), following the conclusion of Group B fixtures.

The WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations semi-finals will be played on Saturday (25 May) at the University of Ghana Stadium.
