Black Stars squad: Otto Addo has not managed communications well, says Arhinful

Andre Ayew, (34) and Baba Rahman (29) were the notable absentees in Otto Addo's squad named on Wednesday, 29 May 2024 ahead of the double-header, which starts with a trip to Bamako against the Eagles on 6 June

Former Black Stars striker Augustine Arhinful believes the national team coach Otto Addo has not managed his communications with captain Andre Ayew and Baba Rahman who were missing from Ghana’s 26-man squad ahead of 2026 World Qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic.

Andre Ayew, (34) and Baba Rahman (29) were the notable absentees in Otto Addo’s squad named on Wednesday, 29 May 2024 ahead of the double-header, which starts with a trip to Bamako against the Eagles on 6 June.

Otto said it was “the most difficult decision” to leave out the Le Havre midfielder as he met the press at the GFA headquarters in Accra. I had a long talk with André and gave him why he is not in the squad.

“This is the decision we took, and it’s not like he necessarily agreed, but I still have great respect for him,” said Otto.

Left-back Baba Rahman is on a self-imposed from the national team after he was booed during Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Central African Republic last year at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

According to the coach, the player still continues to suffer from the reaction he received.

“I have seen his performances. At the moment he is not ready to come back. What happened in Kumasi affected him and his family a lot,”

“We would have needed him very much. I had a long talk with him and I even wanted to fly there but he was sure he wouldn’t change his mind.” he said.

Reacting to this on Team Talk, Arhinful said, Otto Addo has ‘created problems” for himself by revealing details of his conversations with the players.

“The communication put there is an issue. You have to be supported and decision that you are making. If you make a decision, they come back to come and tell us that one I called him I spoke to him he didn’t take it lightly at all, then you are giving way for us to make this argument that we are making.”

He added, “Whatever you think that you can do to bring good fortune to the team is what you have to concentrate on. If you make communications like that publicly, then you are creating problems for yourself.”

“Should we go to Mali or should we play these two marches and if it doesn’t go well, we will start blaming you.”
