Burkina Faso expels French diplomats over subversive activities

Three French diplomats were accused of “subversive activities” and were given until Thursday (18 April) to leave the territory

Gwenaïelle Habouzit and political advisors Guillaume Reisacher and Hervé Fournier, who worked at the French embassy in Burkina Faso, were declared “undesirable persons” (persona non grata).

The French diplomats were accused of “subversive activities” and were given until Thursday (18 April) to leave the territory.

Since coming to power in September 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has reduced relations with the former colonial power, France, by expelling French troops and suspending popular French media.

To exert its sovereignty, Burkina Faso formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in September 2023 and exited ECOWAS with Mali and Niger on 28 January this year.

According to the Burkina Faso Information Agency in December 2022, two French “spies” interested in the Burkinabè FDS activities were chased away.
