Ecobank supports fight against COVID-19 with GHC1.3 million

Ecobank Ghana partners the Ecobank Foundation to support Ghana’s COVID-19 Private Sector Fund to fight the coronavirus

Ecobank Ghana is partnering with the Ecobank Foundation to support the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund to fight the coronavirus.

The bank has donated about GHC1.3 million to the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund to help fight the coronavirus disease in the country.

The donation comprises GHC750,000, personal protective equipment (PPE) and 10,000 testing kits valued at GHC550,000.

The test kits were donated to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

The PPE is also to support the Ga East Infectious Disease Centre, which is under construction.

The equipment is expected to complement the national stock of essential logistics required by frontline health workers for the early detection and timely reporting of COVID-19 in Ghana.

To ensure the sustainability of the communities in which the bank operates, Ecobank through its membership of the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB), has also supported the government with logistics and cash to help educate the public on preventive measures against the disease.

The bank also supported national efforts to mitigate hardships among market porters, popularly known as “kayayei”, during the partial lockdown of the country.

In line with the Ecobank Foundation’s strategy, the bank continues to engage stakeholders such as the Africa Centres for Disease Control, the Ghana Red Cross and faith-based organisations, as well as other strategic businesses, in a joint effort to eradicate the pandemic.

In support of the government’s “stay home and stay safe” agenda, Ecobank is encouraging the use of its digital channels for financial transactions.

In line with this objective, Ecobank has waived charges on its digital channels and increased transaction value and limits allowed on its platforms.

Daniel Sackey, managing director of Ecobank Ghana, said: “As a bank that cares, Ecobank is positioned and committed to supporting the efforts of the government and other relevant stakeholders to manage and stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Sackey said, “In Ghana, Ecobank has always led the financial services industry through innovations and it is actively driving government’s ‘Stay home, stay safe’ objective whilst encouraging customers to prioritise the use of its digital channels for financial transactions.

“This presents a new dimension to digital self-service and safety protocols for reduced transmission of COVID-19 and the preservation of life. Ecobank is fully committed to supporting all customers to utilise its digital platforms and has the infrastructure to drive this agenda,” he said.

The Ecobank Group has so far donated more than US$3 million towards mitigating the spread of the coronavirus disease across Africa.
