Team Ghana wrapped up an impressive campaign in the 2024 CAA Regional II Athletics championships with ten gold medals on Wednesday (5 June), but there was no qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games to be staged in July.
The competition was an Olympic qualifier with about 450 athletes from 15 countries in the ECOWAS sub-region competing at the University of Ghana stadium.
On the field, Kennedy Ocansey in the absence of African Games champion Evans Cadman won gold in the men’s high jump with a Personal Best (PB) of 2,18m.
” I am happy for this performance but I was expecting more. I worked hard for this but it was not enough for the Olympics- I have to go back and do more work. I want to finish the season with an Olympic ticket,” Ocansey said.
On the track, Alao Sadiq won bronze in the men’s 800m final running 1.50.83s. David Nakousi won gold in men’s 1500m. In the women’s 200m final, Mary Boakye grabbed gold with a time of 23.24s.
Gariba Sakat won gold in women’s 500m, and she was delighted with her victory.
Edwin Gadayi followed up his 100m gold with a silver medal in the men’s 200m and the men’s 4x400m quartet won gold with a time of 30.9.53s.
The men’s 4x400m quartet won gold with a time of 30.9.53s. Daniel Mantey-Otibu and Peter Antiedu are members of the quartet.
Day One saw the Ghanaian athletes, amassing a total of five gold medals across various disciplines.
Edwin Kwabla Gadayi set the tone with a dominant victory in the men’s 100m, clocking an impressive 10.28 seconds.
Esther Obenewa, the high jump queen, secured gold with a jump of 1.79m. While happy with the win, Obenewa aspires for even greater heights, hinting at a burning desire to push her limits further.
Ishmael Arthur, Ghana’s long-distance ace, delivered a sensational performance in the 10,000m race with a time of 28:11.79s.
Adding another layer of exhilaration, Ghana’s female sprint relay team – Deborah Acheampong, Janet Mensah, Mary Boakye, and Hor Halutie – electrified the crowd with a breathtaking performance in the women’s 4x100m, securing another gold medal for the home nation.
Faustina Owusu capped off the golden day for Ghana with a victory in the Women’s Discus throw, bringing the total to a resounding five.
So no qualification from the CAA Region II Championship held in Ghana. It means the 4x100m relay team remains the only track and field athletes from Ghana set to compete at the Olympics in Paris later in July.
