CAF Women’s Champions League: Ampem Darkoa seal semi-final spot

Ghanaian champions progress after 3-1 win over Huracanes F.C

Ampem Darkoa Ladies have qualified for the semi-final stage of this season’s CAF Women’s Champions League after a 3-1 win over Huracanes F.C.

The Ghanaian champions got off to a perfect start when Tracey Twum shot them in front with a sublime free kick after just nine minutes.

Captain Jennifer Owusuaa was brought down on the edge of the box and from 25 yards, Tracey Twum made no mistake, as she curled it home.

Eight minutes later, Huracanes escaped narrowly as Tracey Twum’s fine, low cross eluded every one, much to the relief of the Equatorial Guineans.

There was a brief moment of worry for Nana Mma after the enterprising Jennifer Owusuaa went down injured. However, she was able to continue the match after receiving medical attention.

On the 30th minute, it was Ghana’s turn to show grit and goalkeeper Debora Brown scored full marks as she dealt with a dangerous corner kick by fisting it to safety.

On the hour mark, coach Nana Adarkwa introduced Gnabekan Yayimaya for Maybel Amoyaw who had played an integral role up to that point.

The substitution injected a new sense of urgency and purpose into Ampem Darkoa who doubled their advantage just ten minutes after that. Once again it was Tracey Twum who was on hand to profit from a defensive mix up to score her second of the night.

Ampem Darkoa wrapped up the comprehensive result when substitute Yayimaya scored the third in the 88th minute after a brilliant team move.

Huracanes F.C clawed back a goal in the 90+2 minutes but it was no more than a consolation goal as Ampem Darkoa held on to seal qualification.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies will now face Sporting Casablanca in Wednesday’s semi-final.

By virtue of their 3-1 win over the Moroccans in their opening group game, Ampem Darkoa Ladies will finish as group winners ahead of A.S Far of Morocco.
