Carruthers Tetteh: My passion to seek justice for a raped girl inspired me to study law

Carruthers Tetteh

The first visually impaired law lecturer at the University of Cape Coast Carruthers Tetteh has said his passion to study law was inspired by the quest to seek justice for a girl who was raped and denied justice.

In December 2023, Tetteh was appointed by the University of Cape Coast as the first visually impaired lecturer at the Faculty of Law. He currently teaches Criminal Law and the Ghana Legal System.

Born with a passion for law and a desire to advocate for the less privileged, Tetteh’s life took an unexpected turn when he lost his sight at the age of 11 due to a drug reaction.

However, this setback did not deter him from pursuing his dreams.

He graduated with a first-class degree in English and History in 2015 at the University of Cape Coast and was also the overall best-graduating student with visual impairment.

Speaking on the Road to Greatness segment on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (18 January), Tetteh said he had always wanted to do something to impact society positively.

“Right from birth, I have always wanted to be in a position to help people and contribute positively to affect life.”

“So when I lost my sight, I once heard the story of a young girl who was raped and denied justice because she was coming from a poor background, so that is when the interest developed,” Tetteh said.
