Ceremony between twelve-year-old girl and Gborbu Wulomo was traditional betrothal, says Ayikoi Otoo

Many Ghanaians have been angered after seeing videos of the ceremony purported to be the marriage between the twelve-year-old and the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo

The ceremony performed between the 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo and the 12-year-old girl was a traditional betrothal and not marriage, the Ga Dangme Council has said.

The move comes after videos and pictures of Saturday’s customary wedding ceremony between the girl and the priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, went viral on social media, angering a cross-section of Ghanaians.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, has petitioned the director general of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for the arrest, investigation and prosecution of the Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII.

However, a statement issued and signed by the president of the Ga Dangme Council, Nii Ayikoi Otoo said “It is important to clarify that the traditional ruler has stated that the relationship with the underage girl is a betrothal and not a marriage.”

“This distinction to us has altered the legal implications.”

“We are inclined to side with the Gborbu Wulomo since the original reportage made the point that there was another ceremony that awaited the girl to purify and prepare her for procreation,” the statement added.
