Chelsea book League Cup semi-final after shootout win over Newcastle

Chelsea kept their hopes of lifting the EFL Cup alive with a dramatic late turnaround to beat Newcastle United 4-2 on penalties after a one-all draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle in front after only 16 minutes of that match.

They were heading for the semi-finals until Mykhailo Mudrick popped up with an equalizer for Chelsea in the second minute of stoppage time.

There is no extra time at this stage of the league cups, so it went straight to penalties.  Kieran Trippier and Matt Ritchie both missed for Newcastle.

Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Mudryk were all on target for Chelsea but only Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes scored penalties for Newcastle, who suffered fresh disappointment after their Champions League exit.

Chelsea advanced to the semi-finals alongside Middlesbrough and Fulham, who beat Port Vale and Everton 3-0 and on penalties respectively.
The fourth semi-finalist will be decided on Wednesday when Liverpool play West Ham United.
