Consider extending tenure of presidents to eight years, says Nungua Mantse

Nii Odaifio Welentse III urges the government to consider extending the term in office for Ghanaian presidents from four to eight years

Nii Odaifio Welentse III, the paramount chief of Nungua, has urged Parliament to consider extending the tenure of Ghana’s heads of state from four to eight years.

Speaking at a durbar of Nungua chiefs and people attended by President Akufo-Addo, the chief said the extension will allow current and successive governments to complete laudable projects launched during their tenure.

“Since the beginning of the Fourth Republic till date, there is no government that has stayed in office for just one term (except John Mahama); it has never happened.

“Maybe nobody understands me. All the presidents have had their two terms in office to complete their work. I would like it to be our internal arrangement in Ghana that every president should be given eight years in office before we go to the polls.”

He believes the extension of the tenure in office for the Akufo-Addo-led government to continue the various projects earmarked for execution in the Teshie-Nungua catchment area will relieve the burden on residents.

Bold leadership

Touching on the novel coronavirus, Nii Odaifio Welentse III commended the president for his exemplary leadership at the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak in Ghana.

“Since I ascended the throne, I have never been afraid before. But with the outbreak of the COVID-19, I thought I was almost dead. The way you have handled this pandemic as president gave some of us hope that we won’t die. God bless you,” he said.

“Most presidents in Africa were missing during the pandemic, but you were addressing us every time about the pandemic. And up till now, you are here with us and because of that God has blessed us.”

Nii Odaifio Welentse III however appealed to the president to take a second look at security in Ghana because of the rising incidence of criminal activity.
