Consultant to BoG: Be proactive in sanctioning banks over staff fraud

A contract staff of one of the major banks in Ghana has been arrested by the security agencies for allegedly stealing close to GHC 1.2 million

A banking consultant, Richmond Atuahene, has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to sanction banks whose staff are found culpable of engaging in collusion to defraud customers.

A contract staff of one of the major banks [name withheld] in Ghana has been arrested by the security agencies for allegedly stealing close to GHC 1.2 million from customers’ bank accounts.

He used two months to move the said amount from the various customers’ bank accounts including that of a former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and a judge, who are both deceased.

Be proactive

Reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (19 June), Atuahene said: “I believe Bank of Ghana should be very proactive and sanction some of these banks.”

“Bank of Ghana must make sure that all these incidents are reported because I have an experience,” Atuahene said. “In my case, they suppressed it, and these three guys who caused this mess were able to get onto a new institution.”

“I believe BoG should now be very proactive and sanction some of these banks. I believe the processes, the people, the system and externals are also creating vulnerabilities in the system,” Atuahene added.
