Damongo: Youth group to protest against political interference in chieftaincy affairs

A youth group in Damango in Savannah Region calling itself “United For Purpose In Gonjaland (UFPG)”, has announced its intention to hold a peaceful demonstration on Sunday (21 July 2024) to register its dismay on political interferences when it comes to chieftaincy issues in the region.

According to the group, the protest is in response to the troubling trend of some politicians who use sacred palaces for their personal and partisan interests.

At a press conference in Damongo of the Savannah Region on Saturday (20, July 2024), the leader of the group, Yussif Seidu Arimiyaw indicated that the intended demonstration is also instigated by the recent activities of some partisan decoys parading themselves around the chiefs and irresponsibly using the palaces for their selfish and dangerous political advantage.

“Recently we have seen some partisan political actors masquerading as individuals at the palaces using the name of our chiefs to attack their political opponents. Especially the issue of Damongo chieftaincy has been in existence since the demise of the late paramount chief of Damongo, Damongowura Jakpa Lermu Tumtumbain in 2016,” he added.

“Only for desperate politicians without campaign message to resort to the Damongo chieftaincy issues to attack the personality of the venerable hardworking Member of Parliament for Damongo Samuel Abu Jinapor.”

According to the group, for the past three years, the region has seen massive development most particularly in Damongo and they cannot allow any desperate politician to jeopardise the efforts of the government and
the MP for the area, Abu Jinapor.

“So any politician who is aiming at winning an election should focus on issues base politics and not resort to name calling, chieftaincy and tribal issues for their political gains. So we will urge every Gonjalander to advise any politician who comes to seek their vote to speak on bread and butter and not on petty issues”, the group stated.

The group has so far submitted a formal notification to the Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service in Damongo, Savannah Region, outlining the concerns and the nature of the planned demonstration.
The planned demonstration is expected to start at 10am at the Damongo Community Centre.
