Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, transitional military president of Chad, was declared the presidential election winner on Thursday (9 May) with 61.03% of votes.
His opponent, Dr Succès Masra, obtained 18.53%.
Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno became the transitional president of Chad on 20 April 2021, following the death of his father, Idriss Déby, who died while leading troops in battle.
The lead-up to the election was fraught with controversy, including the extension of the transitional period by two years, which Mahamat had initially promised would not happen.
The election itself was shadowed by the deaths of at least two people and allegations of vote-rigging and intimidation by the state security forces.
Rights groups and several political opponents have raised concerns about the fairness of the elections, especially following the violent death of Yaya Dillo Djerou, one of Mahamat’s main opponents, just days before the election.
Despite these challenges, Mahamat’s victory was bolstered by the endorsement of a coalition of over 220 political parties and associations.
