December Polls: Napo warns Ashanti voters against “wasting votes” on NDC
The vice-presidential candidate of the NPP has said the opposition NDC has repeatedly shown a lack of commitment to the development of the Ashanti Region
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has cautioned voters in the Ashanti Region against supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections.
Speaking at a rally in Tweapeasi, within the Odotobiri Constituency, on Tuesday, Dr Prempeh—popularly known as “Napo”-asserted that the NDC has repeatedly shown a lack of commitment to the development of the region, and a vote for them would be a wasted one.
“We vote in elections for development. If you cast your vote for a political party that does not prioritise your progress, then you have wasted that vote. The NDC receives substantial votes from the Ashanti Region, yet they still view this region as one that doesn’t support them,” Napo said.
“The progress of the country, especially the Ashanti Region, comes to a standstill whenever the NDC assumes power, and I believe it’s deliberate.”
Napo accused the NDC of consistently neglecting the Ashanti Region’s needs, despite securing significant votes from the region in previous elections. He expressed his disappointment, claiming that the NDC has a discriminatory attitude towards the region and its people.
Citing specific examples, Dr Opoku Prempeh highlighted the NDC’s introduction of harmful policies during their tenure. He pointed to the capitation policy under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which he claimed was imposed solely on the Ashanti Region by the NDC to create hardship.
“This was a deliberate move to punish the people of the Ashanti Region,” Napo claimed. He called on the electorate to reject the NDC on 7 December, and support the NPP, a party that has the region’s interests at heart.
Napo also took aim at former President John Mahama’s past remarks about the Ashanti Region, where Mahama allegedly said, “Even if you construct their roads with gold, they will never appreciate.” According to Napo, such comments demonstrate the NDC’s disregard for the region’s concerns.
“Everything shows that the NDC and John Mahama do not have the Ashanti Region in their plans. Don’t waste your precious votes on them”, he stated.
