Despite Group devastated as Neat FM’s Kwadwo Wiafe Annor dies

Reports say the thirtysomething, super-energetic star of Neat FM’s drive time and Funky Freaky Friday died of COVID-19

Kwadwo Wiafe Annor – “MC’s MC” and popular host of Neat FM’s Funky Freaky Friday – died suddenly on 4 June after a brief illness while on admission to the private Nyaho Clinic in Accra.

The news was wholly unexpected and threw the Despite Group of media companies – home to Peace FM, Neat FM and UTV – into mourning.

Wiafe Annor had no chronic illness. However, a member of the management team at Peace FM has told Asaaseradio.com that the vibrant DJ/MC was moved to the Nyaho because while he was at home receiving treatment for COVID-19, the infection took a turn for the worse and began to present itself in severe symptoms.

The senior manager at Peace stressed that Wiafe Annor had no underlying conditions and was energetic and reasonably fit. The Airport Residential Area branch of Nyaho began to offer COVID-19 testing just last month, so moving him there seemed like a smart move, the member of Peace FM’s management said.

Peace steps up the hygiene

Once on admission, however, Wiafe Annor’s health deteriorated rapidly and he died within a week. He was just 33, and leaves behind a wife and three children.

Managers of Peace FM are taking the development seriously and have stepped up anti-coronavirus health and hygiene protocols at all their premises.

In an unrelated development, the Nyaho Clinic issued a notice on Friday 5 June announcing the suspension of all COVID-19 testing on the premises. The notice stated no reason for the suspension. This was followed quickly by a second notice, this one from the managing director of the Nyaho Medical Centre, Elikem Tamaklo, announcing that he, too, had tested positive the previous day for COVID-19.

Dr Tamaklo later took to Facebook to confirm that he and his family had tested positive “after my wife and I fell ill this week”.

“As I have been working remotely from home over the last few weeks, this exposure was from the community,” Dr Tamaklo wrote, “and highlight[s] the urgency to ramp up testing as the country continues to open up.”

Dr Tamaklo continued: “I want to use my personal story to highlight that there are many people who have been stigmatised after being found to be positive for the virus.

“This has resulted in a lot of people not wanting to get tested and staying silent out of fear. We cannot allow fear to win in this time and we need to keep hope alive.”

The Nyaho confirmed that Dr Tamaklo would take a period of leave to focus on recovery. His family is in quarantine, the clinic said, and will respect all the protocols surrounding the treatment for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Wiafe Annor family announced that the funeral for the effervescent DJ will take place on 4 July. He was also a key member of the Despite Media Group’s marketing team and doubled up as the host of Neat FM’s drive-time Ye ko Fie show.
