ECG enhances metering system in Kumasi with new smart prepaid devices

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has embarked on an innovative project to enhance the electricity metering system in the Ashanti Region.

As part of the “Loss Reduction Project,” the power distributor is introducing new smart prepaid meters that promise to improve user experience and operational efficiency.

Speaking during the pilot project tour, Engineer Daniel Mensah, general manager of the Ashanti Substation, explained the features and benefits of the new meters. The initiative, he said, is designed to address the clutter and inefficiencies associated with traditional metering systems.

“With this arrangement, we can house up to six meters in a single enclosure or meter box, avoiding the need to spread them across the surface of the wall.”

“The main objective is to make the system user-friendly and improve upon the existing setup. These are smart prepaid meters. The meter will communicate with servers immediately after you purchase the prepaid credit, ensuring a quick and efficient update,” Mensah noted.

The integration of smart technology extends to user convenience as well. Customers can now use ECG’s mobile app to purchase credit from the comfort of their homes or workplaces. Upon purchase, a receipt is issued directly to their phone. This feature not only enhances user experience but also reduces the need for physical interactions with ECG offices.

If the purchased credit does not register on the meter, customers can use the User Interface Unit (UIU) device to check the current, voltage, and amperage. This additional tool ensures that users can independently verify the status of their meter and troubleshoot basic issues.

The pilot project is currently being rolled out in the Asokwa District, where all new meter applications will receive these smart ‘CHINT’ prepaid meters.

“We will use this type of meter throughout the greater part of Kumasi. In the Asokwa District, this is the standard meter we will now install,” Mensah noted. “When we are replacing your old meter, you don’t pay a dime. Replacement is free. Currently, we are in the pilot phase, and after three months, we will begin the full rollout”.
