The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the president to remove the acting municipal chief executive for Ejura-Sekyeredumase, Salisu Bamba.

The party is also pushing for the immediate interdiction of the municipal police commander, Detective Superintendent Philip Oduro Hammond, and the military commander for leading the current joint deployment.

The call comes after the killing of two people as protesters clashed with security personnel on Tuesday (29 June).

Addressing the press in Ejura after visiting the families of the two men killed on Tuesday, Sammy Gyamfi, the communications officer of the NDC, described the incident as “state-sponsored”.

“… MCE cannot continue to be in office and it is important that with immediate effect, he is dismissed, arrested and prosecuted,” Gyamfi said. “Aside that, the police commander for Ejura, the military commander who was responsible for the mindless deployment that caused the death of [Abdul] Nasiru and Mohammed Murtala, must be immediately interdicted, prosecuted and punished in accordance with law.”

The civil unrest in Ejura erupted when Ibrahim Mohammed “Kaaka”, 45, was reportedly attacked by unknown people in the small hours of Sunday 27 June.

He died on Monday afternoon (28 June) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving treatment.

At least two suspects have been arrested in connection with his murder.

Two suspects – Ibrahim Issaka and Fuseini Alhassan – were picked up on Monday evening in response to police intelligence.

Security personnel then fired into an angry crowd of youth in the town after the funeral of “Kaaka” on 29 June, killing Abdul Nasiw and Muntala Mohammed.
