2024 SONA: I’m proud Ghanaians haven’t fallen for the instigation to overthrow an elected government, says Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo said the people of Ghana have shown admirable commitment to multi-party democracy

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed pride in Ghanaians for their dedication to democracy and resisting calls to use force to topple an elected government.

Delivering the 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Tuesday (27 February) Akufo-Addo said, “In spite of all our shortcomings and difficulties, the people of Ghana have shown admirable commitment to multi-party democracy and have not fallen for the instigations to resort to the violent overthrow of an elected government.”

“It gives me quite a satisfaction and great pride to hear young Ghanaians today who believe that criticising the President of the Republic and challenging government proposals are normal, regular activities.”

According to Akufo-Addo, the past 32 years of the Fourth Republic has witnessed the most sustained period of stability and economic growth in the country’s history.

“We should be proud of what we have achieved and seek to protect and build on it,” the president said.

He, however, noted that currently, there are about 550 radio stations in operation in Ghana.

“Some of the young people listen with incredulity when they hear about the Ghana that was once without private radio stations and people had to tune into foreign stations to hear critical and opposition voices…”
