Emmanuel Akwetey: Ghana Police Service has displayed confidence ahead of NDC protest

IDEG’s Emmanuel Akwetey praises police for confidence in managing NDC’s nationwide protest, calls for peaceful demonstration

Emmanuel Akwetey, the executive director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), has commended the Ghana Police Service (GPS) for their confidence in granting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) permission to hold a nationwide protest.

The demonstration, which is taking place in all 16 regional capitals, is in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to audit the voters’ register ahead of the December elections, a key demand from the NDC.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Tuesday (17 September), Akwetey highlighted the significance of the police’s decision.

“It’s a very positive demonstration of the preparedness of the police to handle a demonstration on the scale,” he remarked.

Traditionally, the police might limit protests to avoid disruption, but in this instance, they have permitted a widespread demonstration, which Akwetey views as a sign of preparedness.

Akwetey also called for the public to trust in the police’s ability to oversee the protest but urged caution, noting the need for the NDC to lead the demonstrations responsibly.

“So it’s with a positive mind but also with caution that we all look forward to today’s demonstration, but we hope NDC will chauffeur it in a certain way that wouldn’t lead to any bloodshed and destruction and riots.”
