Enskinment of new Bawku Naba is “illegal”, says government

The government has reiterated that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II remains the only Bawku Naba recognised by the state

The government has condemned the purported enskinment of a new Bawku Naba on Wednesday (15 February), at Nalerigu in the North East Region.

In a statement on Wednesday (15 February) signed by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the government described the move as “illegal and a threat to national security”.

There were media reports on Wednesday that suggested that Alhaji Seidu Abagre has been enskinned by the overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga as a new Bawku Naba.

But the statement said, “Government reiterates Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the Bawku Naba, duly gazetted and a member of the National and Upper East Regional Houses of Chiefs”.

“The security agencies have therefore been directed to arrest and prosecute any other person who holds himself out as Bawku Naba,” the statement added.
